Project 2: Concept Ideas

A Young Girl contemplating her future.
These sketches are of me trying to convey an enclosure that starts on the right with thick stone construction, is dark and cold and with little windows. The movement would then be to move from this cold into a warmer timber construction with curved roof to calm the occupant with open glass to the left to let them look out into the world.

A young girl contemplating thought.
In this sketch I am wanting to produce a space that enables the occupant to see out into the world but with differing degrees of control over what she can see as she thinks and makes decisions. I want the space to be elevated with some sort of stone stair or ladders within heavy construction causing someone to use effort to reach this place of thought. The upper space is to be made of timber to make the occupant feel safe and at home in the upper space. I want this space to be situated just off the coast of a major city with restricted views back towards the city and large views out towards the ocean. I want the balcony to be made of glass so as to expose the occupant when she moves out there to give her the option of controlled and uncontrolled exposure to the outside world. I also think the experience of standing on a glass floored balcony over the sea below would be an empowering feeling, allowing the occupant to face fears and give her courage and self esteem to make her decisions.

I want this upper space to play with its ability to control light. With specifically place windows to bounce the light around the room, creating dark spaces in the corners and light spaces at the centres. I believe it will give the occupant the choice depending on their mood and their position in the decision process to what light she may wish to be in and what views she may wish to see. I also want to have a window seat with controlled views looking back at the city, grounding and contextualising the occupant to remind her of reality. I also want the upper space to be of heavy contruction but the window box to be of timber construction for her to feel safe as she looks back towards the city.

In this sketch I'm trying to further the ideas of controlling and movement of light. I like the idea that from the glass balcony you can look back through the windows to see the city, so you are still able to contextualise you decisions and yourself. It is almost like looking back through your decision making process.

A young girl on top of the world star gazing while she contemplates her future.
My narrative has grown here as I explored the possibility of a further space on top of the building for her to star gaze upon as she makes her decision. It also further developes for me 3 spaces in which I can allow different control on the views. Inside the upper space her views are completely controlled, she is not exposed and this allows for her to consider her decision inwardly, looking inside herself for the answer and out to the city, her past for experience. The glass balcony then gives her no control but thrusts her into exposure allowing her to consider the rest of the environment in her decision. Then as she moves to the top of the building I want her to feel in control and know and implement her decision through the use of her star gazing tools. I want some more degrees of control to this top space but am unsure of how to do so in a way that the occupant controls. I also think that the process of star gazing allows someone to focus in on what they want, the stars or even to see what is going on in the city from her coast side location. I think to really reveal the effect of this control of light and view situation I need to use a poche drawing.
